Dr. Zong Selected To Present at AAAL and AERA Events

S.A.
Congratulations to Dr. Mikki Zong, St. Luke’s Upper School World Language Teaching Fellow, who recently had three papers accepted for presentation at the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) Conference and the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting.

In March, Dr. Zong will head to Houston to present her papers “The Impact of Playback Speed and Language Proficiency on Multilingual Learners’ Listening Comprehension” and “The Effect of Captions and Playback Speed on Listening Comprehension at Varying Proficiency Levels” at the AAAL Conference. Her first paper, studying second language acquisition, explores the relationships between playback speed, overall English proficiency, listening sub-scores, and various background/experiential factors. Her second paper studies language and technology and investigates the effects of captions on both easier and harder comprehension questions at three playback speed levels.

The following month, Dr. Zong heads to Philadelphia for the AERA Annual Meeting. Her paper, “Bilingual/ESL Preservice Teachers’ Heritage Language and Language Identity: Evidence from Multimodal Literacy Autobiographies,” was selected from over 11,000 submissions! It focuses on teachers’ lives, identities, and journeys and analyzes autobiographical projects by bilingual/ESL preservice teachers.

“I’m excited to discuss critical topics and issues with other researchers and educators and bring back some fresh perspectives,” said Dr. Zong. “I'm proud to represent our school at these big events.”
